Spring Home Maintenance

There’s nothing better than that spring feeling in Saskatchewan! The sun feels warmer, the days are longer and the grass starts getting greener. The kids start playing outside more, outdoor sports begin and spring cleaning is on our mind. Make sure that part of your spring routine is general home maintenance!

We’ve made it easy by creating a general list to go through on a nice weekend to make sure that your home stays well maintained!

Exterior Maintenance

  • Start the air conditioning system (make sure the air condition compressor is level and clear of debris)
  • Wash windows and screens
  • Check caulking, inside and out, and touch up as needed
  • Check garage overhead door, tighten bolts as needed
  • Start and adjust sprinkler system
  • Turn on the water to the exterior hose bibs
  • Confirm downspouts are extended
  • Clean eaves and downspouts
  • Check foundation, concrete, and yard for settling; fill as needed for positive drainage
  • Inspect your roof to make sure there is no shingle damage
  • Stain any pressure treated wood that requires it (I.e. decks, fences, etc.). Make sure to replace any warped or split boards.
  • Schedule lawn aeration and thatching if needed
  • Trim trees and shrubs
  • Pressure wash siding if necessary

Interior Maintenance

  • Test smoke alarms
  • Test and reset GFI breakers
  • Change furnace filter if you haven’t already
  • Clean your HRV filters (including the core if needed)
  • Make sure that cold air returns are clear of furniture or draperies
  • If the furnace has a humidifier, check the manual for the correct setting for spring and summer
  • Pour water down the basement floor drain. As water evaporates, sewer odour can seep into the house
  • Drain sediment from the bottom of the water heater as per the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Test your sump pump and ensure the discharge is not blocked
  • Inspect tile grout and touch up
  • Clean kitchen exhaust filter
  • On pleasant days, open windows to allow the house to breathe
  • Schedule a duct cleaning if you haven’t done it in a few years
  • Schedule your septic tank to be emptied and inspected
